The short answer
Consider WooCommerce for WordPress control, Wix or Squarespace for a content-led business, Square for an operation already using its payments ecosystem, and BigCommerce for another dedicated commerce platform. Switch to solve a specific problem, not simply to replace one subscription.
“Cheaper than Shopify” is not a complete migration plan. The replacement also has to support your products, payments, order history, and the way customers find you. A lower advertised price can disappear once you recreate the missing workflow.
We selected eight alternatives with meaningfully different use cases instead of padding the list to ten. If your Shopify store already works well, first audit unnecessary apps and unused plan features. You may be able to solve the cost problem without moving the business.

The shortlist, explained
These recommendations describe fit for the task. They are not measured performance scores.
Control over a WordPress storefront
WooCommerce
A sensible candidate if you want ownership of the WordPress environment and have maintenance support. Treat backups, updates, and staging as part of the purchase. More control helps only when you can operate it.
Check before choosing: Include technical labor in the comparison.
A service or content business adding a store
Wix
Shortlist Wix when the current site feels like a store wrapped around a broader business. Test the actual service and product journey together. Moving makes more sense if this simplifies the work your team does weekly.
Check before choosing: Verify integrations for subscriptions and fulfillment.
A focused, design-led product collection
Squarespace
A candidate for a smaller catalog supported by strong photography and editorial pages. Use a realistic collection in your evaluation; a polished template does not prove that complex options or unusual checkout requirements will fit.
Check before choosing: Confirm product-type fees and export options.
A commerce-focused platform comparison
BigCommerce
Evaluate this when the problem is a commerce requirement rather than a dislike of storefront subscriptions. Request a total at your sales volume and preferred processor under the updated 2026 fee structure.
Check before choosing: Do not rely on old claims about plan names or additional provider fees.
An existing Square merchant selling online
Square
The most useful reason to investigate Square is an existing in-person workflow. Test whether online inventory, pickup, and staff processes become easier together. Avoid switching solely for a free headline.
Check before choosing: Availability and features vary by market and plan.
Adding commerce to an existing website
Ecwid
Ecwid is an option when you want to retain an existing website and add a storefront. Start the evaluation with your current page structure and the exact product count you need.
Check before choosing: Check which tier unlocks your required sales channels.
An artist or maker with a small collection
Big Cartel
Consider a deliberately smaller storefront when the collection is small and the owner does not need a broad operational platform. A simpler tool can be a benefit if it covers the complete job.
Check before choosing: Check product limits before importing the catalog.
A design-led site with developer involvement
Webflow
Worth evaluating when control over the website experience is the reason for leaving. Involve the person who will maintain the design and integrations before buying; the marketing site and checkout must both meet requirements.
Check before choosing: Check ecommerce limits and transaction charges separately from workspace pricing.
- 1Name the problem
- 2Prove the replacement works
- 3Move with a rollback plan
Write down the reason for leaving
Is the problem the bill, the editing experience, a missing selling feature, or the time spent maintaining apps? Those are four different decisions. Reducing subscriptions may require fewer apps. Changing product architecture may justify a new platform. Mixing them together makes every alternative look equally attractive.
Give the replacement a pass/fail test. For example: “We need local pickup and online stock to reconcile without a spreadsheet.” A candidate that fails that task is not a bargain, even if its homepage looks better.
Plan the migration before canceling anything
Export product and customer data, document existing URLs, and identify what cannot move automatically. Test redirect behavior, taxes, order emails, refunds, and fulfillment in the replacement environment. Keep a rollback plan while the old store is still available.
Recurring payments and customer passwords deserve particular attention: do not assume they can be exported and re-created like product descriptions. Confirm the supported migration path with the providers before changing an active subscription business.
- Inventory integrations and recurring subscriptions.
- Map important URLs and search landing pages.
- Test checkout and refunds with the supported test tools.
- Move only when the replacement workflow is complete.
Our recommendation
Make the choice fit your business.
Choose an alternative only after it demonstrably solves your current constraint. Staying with Shopify and simplifying the surrounding stack can also be the right outcome.
