The short answer
We would start with Shopify when selling products is the core business, and include Wix in the shortlist when the website must bring together services, content, and a store. Neither is automatically the cheaper choice: compare the payment-enabled plan, required apps, and processing costs for your actual workflow.
A useful Shopify vs Wix comparison starts with the business you need to run on Monday morning. Can a customer choose the right option, pay, receive the order, and get help without you moving information between disconnected tools? That matters more than choosing a winner from a generic feature list.
This guide is for a small business choosing between these two hosted platforms. The recommendations are editorial judgments based on publisher documentation, not the results of a hands-on speed or conversion benchmark. We separate verified plan information from suggested evaluation exercises so you can make your own decision.

The shortlist, explained
These recommendations describe fit for the task. They are not measured performance scores.
A business centered on selling products
Shopify
Shopify’s Basic plan includes a full online store and inventory management. The published US pricing distinguishes monthly billing from the lower annual equivalent. Our recommendation is to evaluate Shopify first for a product-focused operation, then test the specific checkout and fulfillment requirements that could require an app or higher plan.
Check before choosing: Processing, optional apps, and applicable third-party transaction fees are separate. The $0 Agentic offering is not the same product as a full online store.
A broader business website that also sells
Wix
Wix lists payment acceptance and ecommerce capabilities on eligible paid plans. We would put it on the shortlist for a business whose pages need to explain a service, introduce a team, and sell a product collection together. Treat this as a workflow recommendation: build the actual purchase journey before deciding whether it suits you.
Check before choosing: A free Wix website does not mean a free payment-enabled store. Confirm the features and renewal price of the exact plan offered in your region.

- 2Test the same workflow on both
- 3Compare the full software estimate
Choose around the work your business does most
For an illustrative candle brand, the difficult questions might involve sizes, bundles, stock levels, shipping zones, and returns. Put those tasks at the center of the trial. A platform that makes the landing page easy but turns routine orders into manual work may be an expensive fit.
For an illustrative interior designer who also sells a small collection, the website may need to explain projects and encourage inquiries before it needs a large product catalog. Evaluate the service journey and the purchase journey together. These examples are decision aids, not claims that either platform cannot serve the other business.
Write down three things that must work without a workaround. Reject neither platform on reputation alone; ask each trial to demonstrate those three requirements.
Compare first-year costs using the same assumptions
Shopify Basic at the published US annual equivalent of $29 a month represents $348 for the year. Twelve months at the listed $39 monthly rate totals $468. Those subscription figures exclude processing and other business costs; they do not describe an introductory promotion.
For Wix, record the price shown for your location, billing period, and payment-enabled plan rather than copying a headline from an old comparison. Then make two columns using the same order count, sales value, and required extras for both platforms.
A hypothetical $20 monthly app adds $240 over a year. This is why a small difference in platform price can be less important than discovering that one essential workflow requires several paid extras. The example is arithmetic, not a quoted app price.
- Record the normal subscription and renewal term, separately from any promotion.
- List required apps, domain renewal, and any paid theme or setup help.
- Estimate processing costs with your expected order value and number of transactions.
- Keep inventory, advertising, postage, tax, and returns outside the software subtotal.
Use this trial checklist before buying an annual plan
Build one realistic product instead of polishing an empty homepage. Include its actual photos, options, shipping information, and stock rules. Check the experience on a phone, then use the provider’s supported test-payment process where available.
Follow an order through your own operating routine. Identify who will receive it, prepare it, answer the customer, and reconcile the payment. Record each task that needs an extra subscription or manual transfer. Do not submit a real charge just to test a button.
Finally, have someone unfamiliar with the project find a product and explain the delivery expectations back to you. Confusion in that exercise is useful evidence about your setup, even if the platform has every feature on your list.
- Create a product with the options you actually need.
- Check payment-provider availability for your business country.
- Evaluate shipping, cancellations, and refund handling.
- Check the email and review tools you intend to connect.
- Compare the resulting software costs in My Stack.
Moving later takes more than exporting products
Wix documents CSV export for physical products, with a limit of 5,000 rows per file; its export documentation says digital products are not currently supported. That is a useful detail to check if moving your catalog is part of the plan.
A product export is only one part of a migration. Make a separate inventory of customer records, images, URLs, subscriptions, and integrations. Ask the destination provider how each item will move. Do not assume a CSV reproduces the design or preserves search traffic.
If you already have a working store, first identify the specific problem you want to solve. A clearer product page or removal of unused apps may be a smaller project than a full migration.
Common questions before you choose
Is Shopify always better for ecommerce? We would shortlist it first for a product-centered business, but the result should depend on your selling requirements, payment options, and operating costs. A general recommendation is not a substitute for testing your own workflow.
Can you sell for free? Neither a free Wix website nor Shopify’s separate $0 Agentic offering should be interpreted as a free version of the full payment-enabled storefront compared here. Check the applicable plan and selling fees.
Which is easier for a beginner? That depends on the task. Time yourself completing a realistic product and order setup in each trial. A template you like is a starting point, not evidence that day-to-day administration will be simpler.
Do you need a paid stack guide? No. Startup Stacked’s tool comparisons and cost builder are free. A guide is an optional purchase for an ordered tool selection and setup sequence; software subscriptions remain separate.
Our recommendation
Make the choice fit your business.
Choose the platform that handles your essential workflow with the fewest awkward steps at a cost you understand. Start with Shopify for a product-centered shortlist and consider Wix for a broader business website, then let your trial results decide.
