The short answer
Shortlist both for a Shopify email program. We would evaluate Klaviyo when the team has a clear customer-segmentation plan, and Omnisend when it wants to test a store-focused email and SMS workflow. Choose using the same audience, send schedule, and required automations; neither is automatically cheaper or more effective for every store.
The useful question in a Klaviyo vs Omnisend comparison is not which logo belongs in your stack. It is whether the platform supports your actual messages, whether someone can operate it, and what the complete workload costs. An attractive entry price says little about an account that sends frequent campaigns and several automated journeys.
This is a research-based buying guide for a small Shopify business, not a deliverability test or a promise of extra revenue. The pricing facts below come from the publishers. The evaluation exercises are our suggested way to make those facts useful for your store.

The shortlist, explained
These recommendations describe fit for the task. They are not measured performance scores.
A customer-data-led email evaluation
Klaviyo
Klaviyo lists email, segmentation, and reporting within a broader marketing and customer-data product set. We would trial it when you can name the customer events and segments you intend to use. Start with those requirements instead of selecting additional products because they appear in the pricing builder.
Check before choosing: The current pricing interface separates several products and usage categories. Compare the complete selected configuration rather than assuming an older entry-price comparison still applies.
A store-oriented email and SMS trial
Omnisend
Omnisend distinguishes stored contacts from the audience you can message on the Free plan. Its documentation lists a Standard send allowance based on contact count and a Pro tier with unlimited email sends. We would trial it with the same campaign and automation workload used for Klaviyo.
Check before choosing: Check billable-contact definitions, channel allowances, and the current tier for your audience. A large imported list does not make all those contacts reachable on the free plan.
- 1Quote an identical workload
- 2Rebuild one real journey
- 3Check migration effort and exclusions
Which is cheaper at your audience size?
Obtain two quotes with identical inputs. Record your billable audience under each provider’s definition, monthly campaign sends, automated sends, and any SMS requirement. Save the quoted billing term and the date. Do this again for a realistic next stage of audience growth.
Here is an illustrative workload: 2,000 recipients receiving four campaigns creates 8,000 sends. Add 1,200 welcome and post-purchase messages and the workload reaches 9,200. That number is useful when choosing a tier; the fact that you have 2,000 addresses alone is not enough.
Keep SMS outside the email subtotal until you have checked destination countries, message type, and the applicable allowance. Do not compare an email-only quote on one side with email plus SMS on the other. Separate a temporary offer from the normal ongoing bill.
- Quote today’s audience and a plausible larger audience.
- Include automated messages in send volume.
- Record required add-ons and who will manage them.
- Compare ongoing cost and one-time migration effort separately.
Test one automation before choosing the platform
Choose a simple journey that matters to your business, such as a welcome sequence. Write the trigger, delay, intended recipient, and reason to exclude a person before touching either editor. This turns the trial into a comparable task.
Use a test profile you control. Confirm that the store event arrives with the fields your logic needs. Check a normal case and a case that should not receive the message. Preview the output on mobile, including the product image, links, and unsubscribe option.
Ask the person who will run email to explain why the profile entered the flow. If they cannot troubleshoot it, record that as an operating cost. More options are useful only when the team can maintain the resulting system.
A migration checklist that goes beyond email addresses
Klaviyo’s migration documentation explicitly includes unsubscribe and suppression data when moving from another provider. Preserve those records rather than treating every exported address as a fresh subscriber.
Make an inventory of forms, active automations, custom fields, segments, integrations, and sending-domain configuration. Map which system owns each message during the transition. A controlled test group is easier to diagnose than switching the entire schedule at once.
Keep a rollback note: what would you pause, what would you restore, and who makes that decision? Compare that work with the expected savings before moving a platform that already meets your needs.
- Preserve opt-outs and suppression status.
- Verify the new sending-domain configuration.
- Check event and field mappings with a test profile.
- Prevent duplicate automated messages during overlap.
- Verify unsubscribe behavior before the full launch.
When staying with your current tool makes sense
If the complaint is a rising bill, first find the part that changed. Is it audience growth, an added product, a new channel, or an automation that sends more often? A focused account review may solve the problem without replacing your email platform.
Use simple payback arithmetic. If a hypothetical migration costs $300 in labor and saves $25 a month, the subscription savings take 12 months to cover that labor. That does not include interruptions or improvements in workflow. Use your own figures rather than treating this example as a quoted migration price.
Questions before you choose
Is Omnisend always cheaper? No universal price claim follows from a starting tier. Compare your workload and selected products in both current pricing tools.
Does either platform guarantee better deliverability? This article has not run a controlled sending test. Your audience, messages, and configuration need evaluation; a feature list does not establish an inbox-placement winner.
Can a new store begin on a free plan? A small test program may fit, but count recipients and all sends first. Two campaigns to 250 people already use 500 sends before any automated messages.
Should you pay for advanced segmentation immediately? We would first identify a decision you can act on. A segment is useful when it changes a message or an offer, not merely because the platform can create it.
Our recommendation
Make the choice fit your business.
Pick the platform whose required configuration you understand and whose workflows your team can maintain. If both pass the trial, compare the ongoing quote and migration effort rather than declaring a winner from headline pricing.
